Its not exactly a static IP, but Dynamic DNS is a good work around. What happens is that you are issued a URL (ie joe.dyndns.org) and it is constantly updated with the current IP of your machine. This means any time you ping,browse to, or otherwise reference that URL it will go straight to your machine. In my opinion this is better, b/c who want to remember an IP anyway. The best part of the whole thing is that this is a free service. You can also pay a small fee and use a domain of your choice (ie yourdomain.com). The only catch is that you have to download and install a dynamic DNS client that will constantly submit the IP of your system. These clients are free and available for Win/*nix/Mac. Some routers (like my Linksys WRT54G) natively support dynamic DNS out of the box, eliminating the need for a client application. Check out dyndns.org which is one of the best in my opinion.

i work for a cable company you can't get a static ip unless you pay for it.
