I am a 39 year old female and have some pigmentation around my lower face, due to sun damage and age! I have been reading about non invasive techniques that can be carried out at home with the same ease as applying a face pack - is this fact, or merely a selling tactic for another 'appearance of younger, fresher skin'?'

Microdermabrasion is effective & yes it can be done at home. It's not nearly as effective as a professional job but still good enough. You can find kits by Olay, L'Oreal, Neutrogena, etc at places as simple as Target or Wal-Mart. I have one by L'Oreal & it works nice. I have acne & slightly rough patchy skin but when I use it a couple times a week my skin looks better & feels soooooo much smoother! Another good one to try is the Olay Regenerist. I would've rather gotten that one but the L'Oreal was cheaper & I didn't have a whole lot of money at the time.

Hiya, Im 32 and I had this when I was pregnant with my daughter, it darkens in the sun too. It will always be there now, so you need to wear total sunblock on your face in the sun to stop it coming back. I visited a dermatologist, you should go, because it might be hormonal or sun damage, each one is treated differently. I was prescribed hydroquinone, but not whilst pregnant. It gets rid of it, and sunblock stops it darkening again. Also dermologica do a more gentle treatment, hydroquinone is very strong. This one works really well too. You can buy it online, its called skin bright and its about £50. You get a night bright, day bright and a daily microfoliant. Nothing else that I tried worked apart from those two.

I have been reading the olay and pond's boxes wondering the same thing. I was in Big Lots of all places and found a kit for $3. The micro. lotion was easy to use and then you apply a moisture lotion with an spf for sunscreen. I was amazed! My skin felt so clean and fresh! I did this twice in one week and my skin did have a better texture and the pores looked reduced. This is the best $3 I have spent in a long time. I went to drugstore.com and the Ponds micro. had come down to $6 so you can invest very little to check this out. Good luck!

Well, it's partly a marketing ploy but they actually do work. Not quite as effective as a professional facial but certainly better than a face scrub. My mother uses the L'Oreal microdermabrasion kit and I can always tell when she does because her skin is really smooth almost like plastic! It's quite effective, it wouldn't stop the clock but it would definately improve the condition of your skin.

microdermabrasion is effective, I am using a home kit twice a week and I love the results, but I don't think it would work with pigmentation and sun damage. you can use "even complexion essence" by Mary Kay for that purpose, it evens tone by helping reduce visible dark spots and reverse skin discoloration

You could try the SkinDoctors Powerbrasion which you can see at:

BUT I would strongly recommend that you visit a skin care professional first. A lot depends on how much care (not a criticism) you have given your skin in the past, you skin care and your present skin care regime. It is not a good idea simply to set about your skin before taking good advice!

I've had medical microdermabrasion and it was fantastic. Personally I wouldn't waste my money on home or beauty salon treatments. Go and see a qualified professional for their opinion. Laser treatment might be more suitable for your skin problems.

I think a retinoid product combined with a 4% hydroquinone bleaching agent works much better and it costs a fraction of the cost of micro. Look at the (EBAY) skinceutecals line for the retinoid and ask your dermatologist for the hydroquininone.
