As they said in the release the painting has aged so much it's hard to tell exactly what was painted. It could be that type of clothing that they wore when they were expecting back then or it could just very well be a scarf as they also said.

With a painting like that it's almost impossible to tell, it's aged so much that the fine details are gone and it's hard to figure out anything, especially when the painter is dead!!

I've also seen past news accounts where they say they may know what her voice sounded like by using some Japanese designed software. How would we really know?

I guess the fine lace on some of her clothing was originally meant to represent pregnancy or a new mother. I don't think we will ever know factually. It's interesting to consider the findings though.

Beauty was different back then.
If you were plump it you were considered beautiful.
Not like nowadays, the runway models that we all strive to be like would be considered repulsive.
Skinniness was a sign of poverty not prestige.
I have a degree in Fine Arts & I have never heard this theory.
It sounds rediculous.
The Mona Lisa was considered a beauty of her time (not my cup of tea though) so of course she is plump....plus that kind of dress with the high belt line can make the thinnest woman look chubby.
Just my 2 cents....

Monal Lisa has a smile and she knows that she is fooling all the people admiring this so- called enigmatic figure who pretends she is a woman but is really a man. You are witnessing the face of daVinci's lover. Needless to say, Monal Lisa is a guy and a gay one...

Myth has it that Mona Lisa was a self portrait of the artist Da Vinci himself.
