...on the web page. For example - if I press "a", in the grey bar at he bottom of the page it says "searching for links that begin with 'a' [press F3 to jump to the next match]. [Press \ to search all text]". If there is a word beginning with 'a' on the webpage then it will select it in red This is driving me mad as it means I can;t merrily type away. Can anybody help me? I need to switch this search function off! I'm desperate.....

Try Pressing Ctrl+F

Go to the internet explorer's properties then to the content tab and click the auto complete button.Under the heading "Use auto complete for"
Uncheck the web addresses box and if the letters still show up uncheck the other boxes and click on :clear forms,clear passwords.

Is there a red box with an 'x' in the middle of it?

thats the close button
try clicking it

that or press ctrl-f.

Tools, internet options, advaced tab, unselect auto complete. Hope that works!!!

are you using Safari, Internet explorer5, 6 or 7 or other?

Internet explorer doesn't do that(Mozilla does)
anyway, you can go to settings and change it there.
