The irony to your question is only highlighted by your historical and institutional ignorance. These months have been created in observance of the countless times in the classroom and history books, that these two groups have been overlooked in their contribution to the building and development of the American culture. It is in itself; a counter measure to assure that those within the group and their achievements are not forgotten, or taken lightly.

No racial heritage months should not be removed. This time of years places emphasis on the achievements of Blacks and Hispanics. Also, it can help pther cultures learn more. However Black and Hispanic history is a year round event. It shouldn't be delegated to just one month. Every day you can learn something new about another person's culture.

This country was founded on the basis of freedom for one and all. If celebration was less commercialized and more about the value those cultures added to this land we "all" call home I would not object with the celebration.
A question to respond to your question is what value do you get from these "celebrations" and how have they impacted you? Are you more educated or inspired by the "monthly" awareness or is it something that needs to be in out thoughts on a daily basis. We often forget to be grateful for what we as a society have created vs one nationality compared to another. I say NEVER forget those who have blessed our lifes, whatever month it may be.

the celebration of certain cultural heritages should never be omited from history. there have been many inventors, many brave, and many ingenious people of many races who have contributed to the many ways we do things today. to eliminate one race because they are not white would be a crime. Black History or Spanish Heritage Month ought to be celebrated to the fullest. to eliminate them would be a racial move on our part. tsk, tsk, on you for even thinking such a thing.

I beleive so. Why?

The minute you go "celebrating" a race for anything, you are effectively saying that that race is either better than others, or is sub-par with others and needs recognition. This breeds the idea of separation of races as well.

It really bothered me in college. Im Hispanic. I was asked to join the Hispanic graduating ceremony. I wondered - Whats the point of having a ceremony just for Hispanics?? Are we, as a group, so substandard that we need to say "Hey - look at me! Im a dumb mexican and I still got a degree!" Its a pointless waste of time. It also pissed me off when Chinese Student Union would put up signs saying "Party this weekend" and then have the directions written in Chinese so only those that could read it could attend.

If white people did this, it would be called racism.

I dont think so. But then again maybe in America cuz i mean u dont c Mexico celebrating martin luther king jr day or fourth of july. But otherwise this is a country of freedom so let the people who want to celebrate it celebrate it and those who dont can just forget about it.
