I don't think that age difference is that bad at all. You should not pass him over for something he is not. You would start the relationship out in a lie. Your grandparents and your mother want a Spanish guy. You weren't looking and a great Italian guy came along. If he is good to you, your family will respect him and grow to love him as you do.

First of all you are 18 and an adult, so you have total control of your decision when it comes to seeking a boyfriend, so there is nothing wrong with you. As for passing the b/f as spanish to your mom, do not attempt to do that it will have some pretty bad consequences. Just tell them flat out that hey this guy is Italian accept it. Oh as for the age problem 18 and 22 is not a bad margin at all, now if you were 18 and dating a guy that was 33 then there would be a problem, lol. I am just giving you some helpful advice, you can take it as you like

Hey, don't even try that thing with a Spanish guy!
1) Love is not a meal, you cannot order what you would like or think it would be proper to eat.
2) You are choosing your guy for YOU, not for your mother and grandparents. If they are interfering about this, THEY are wrong, not you.
3) Take care of your love, honey, and of the guy you love, that's the precious thing you have.

As a fellow Italian, I would not want my woman's parents thinking I'm Spanish (nothing wrong with being Spanish, but I'm not Spanish). It's disrespectful, and not to be rude, but it makes the elders of your family seem narrowminded and foolish. Why even put my daughter/grandaughter in this type of silly predicament. They should offer guidance, not rules and pressure on how you live your life. You are 18 and still young. You cannot please everyone sometimes, worry about making yourself happy first.

Unfortunately that sounds like the dark ages when parents picked out husbands for their daughters.
To start with I don't see that much difference in the age.
I'm not to concerned about boy friends, although it is a place to start, but when the time comes for marriage you have to find a man that makes YOU happy not your grandparents and mother. It's you that will be marring and living with him.Not them.Live your life for you and be happy. Hopefully your grandparents and mother will eventually come around.
One last thing. Honesty is the best policy.

Spanish? Christopher Columbus was Italian but everyone thinks he's Spanish. So the answer is that only the history books will tell.

Why does race matter so much? The only thing that should matter is if you are happy or not.
Don't try to make someone pretend to be something he's not - it's insulting to him and you'll have to maintain that lie for as long as you date this guy.

Is it you....or your family that wants a spanish man? What is it that you want? And in this day and age....I didn't know that kind of stuff mattered anymore. I thought..."if you like him, you like him...no matter what language or where he was born". And really....that is not a huge age difference.

Who you fall in love with IS NOT YOUR PARENTS or GRANDPARENTS choice! They don't have to spend their time with your boyfriend; YOU do! Pick someone that you like for who they are; not their ethnicity. Make sure you like him for who he is, and how he treats you. It's my opinion that your parents are too old-fashioned and a bit bigomist in their thinking. Don't grow up to please everyone else. You'll end up living your life constant frustration- if not misery.

why do you have to lie about his background? let your parents get to know him and if he is a good guy they wont care if he is Italian or Spanish.
