Hypnosis/Hypnotism. Is it real?

Question

Well, I've recently become interested in hypnotism and I just want to know whether people are really able to become hypnotized.

I also want to know what's with the dangling watch thing in movies and such?

Hypnotism is quite real. It is nothing mystical, more like an altered state of conscious in which you may or may not feel anything different. The subject's brainwaves enter the alpha state and in general become more open to hypnotic suggestion. Most people (IQ of 70 or so or above) are hypnotizable, to one degree or another, and often more intelligent, less critical people are easier to hypnotize IF they trust the hypnotist (this is known as rapport.. the trust bond).

There are many good sites on the net to get more information about hypnosis. Some of the Master hypnotists living today are Cal Banyan, Gerald Kein, and Roy Hunter, to name a few.

As for sites, I would start at http://www.howstuffworks.com and query for hypnosis, also good is http://www.hypnosis.com and http://www.hypnosis.org. Those should give you a decent start.

Yes it is real, but not everyone can be hypnotized. The dangling watch ... that basically stemmed from the idea of getting the person to focus on something intensely to help slip them into a hypnotic state.

I believe in it....Hypnotism puts you in a relaxed state of mind. The whole swinging the watch thing just deals w/ focusing on an object to get your body to relax. I've been put under by an amateur hyponotist a few times. If I have a hard time falling asleep, I put myself back in that relaxed state of mind and I'm asleep within 15 mins.
