Apparently it was just a big bird..

At the very end of this sequence, as the three main characters move down the road and away from the camera, one of the larger birds (often said to be an emu, but more probably a crane) standing at the back of the set moves around and spreads its wings. No munchkin, no hanging -- just a big bird.

It, indeed, is a large bird, probably a crane. The crew borrowed several large birds from a nearby zoo to make the forest set look more alive and natural. The crane stretches out its wings in the middle back of the set just as Dorothy, the Scarecrow, and the Lion start to skip down the YBR singing "We're Off to see the Wizard" after the "beehive" run-in with the Wicked Witch of the West.

There are lots of rumors and urban legends surrounding the movie. This one is the most wide-spread, probably followed next by the idea that the munchkins were "little drunks." That idea was spread after Judy Garland cracked the joke in an interview. A few of them might have had a little temper, but they weren't stumbling through the studio.

It's an Urban Legend.

At the beginning of the "We're off to see the wizard" sequence, there is a disturbance in the trees off to the right. This was long rumored to be one of the crew (or, by some accounts, one of the dwarf actors) committing suicide by hanging himself, but it is in fact a large bird stretching its wings.

Claim: A lovelorn actor portraying one of the munchkins hanged himself on the set during the filming of The Wizard of Oz, and his death was captured on-camera and used in the final print.

Status: False.

Sorry but no one hanged themselves, though this is a great urban legend. It was just the way the lighting re-acted during the editing process. Check out the dvd special features for full details :-)

yes from what I understand it is real,, there were alot of things that happened during the filming of that movie that were very strange,, including the wicked witch got severly burned and they had to put the movie on hold for like 18 monthes or something for her to heal. and then there's the hanging that you spoke about.

They also say if you turn the sound off and play on of the pink floydes albums it's suppost to go along with the movie,, I can't remember which album it is, I think it's called like through the rainbow or something?

Absolutely not. I heard this too sometime ago. And I found where they thought ir happened too. But I read a few weeks ago that it is false. All the little peopole that started the movie ended it.
