I'm currently in college and work as a temp. All my other temp co-workers have at least one college degree and they're temping. What the hell?

Sounds like people lie about the future in various flaky specialties.

Ok, the real story is that a SCIENCE degree (and I mean lab science like chemistry or physics) guarantees a job and so does an ENGINEERING degree. Anything else is a crap shoot depending on the economic climate and hiring fads during your last semester.

I've been bitten by this snake and nearly starved! No one in school is going to be honest with you about your unmarketable major --you'll just find that out for yourself when you graduate with no employment contract!

I know what you mean. I am a college senior, and as of right now I have worked at so many places that have employees with college degrees doing the same thing I was. For example, I worked through a temp agency this summer and my supervisor had a college degree and was still stuck doing the same kind of hard labor he had been trying to get away from. In the US today, its just you are more likely to be hired for the "regular" jobs if you have a college degree, and you on occasion get some better pay. Mainly, the degree is what makes you look like a better candidate for the job. However, this is not to say that you will be stuck managing a mcdonalds or fighting your way to the top of some labor intensive job. These days it depends on your degree (whether it is a 2 yr, 4yr, masters, PHD, etc.) and what field you are looking to get into. College doesn't "guarantee" but it does help. I wish you the best of luck.

The problem is that back in the old days when College degree's were a little rarer, you were guaranteed a job because the types of people who could

1. do a degree
2. afford a degree

were much more likely to do well in environments that required mental ability over the physical. A bricklayer for example. Now, so many people do degrees that it's hard for employers to pick out of all the people who have degrees, in other words there is too much choice. What you need to do, is to make sure you have skills that go far beyond your degree. You need to show that you're talented at presentations, you can argue in an articulate manner, you can be creative, you can work on many projects and keep your workload balanced, you undertake activities such as physical sports.

Basically, you need to better than the other guy, because he has a degree too.

College does not guarantee anything. A science or engineering degree does not guarantee a job either. I have a BS and MS in Engineering, and I had to work as a temp.

I suggest that you learn as much as you can in your classes. Take an internship or two during the summers. And, see if you can find a Co-op situation in your field of study. The more real world experince you can get while still in school, then better off you will be.

You've got to be able to apply the knowledge you've gained.
So many people look for jobs when they could instead create jobs. Don't expect someone else to hire you, when you won't even hire yourself. A change in mindset is needed. If you fear unemployment, start thinking about filling a niche. That's the independence, and confidence, a degree is supposed to give you. The confidence to start your own company. I see too many graduates complaining about not having good jobs. That's pretty pathetic. They couldn't purchase the confidence it takes to run their own business. It's rough out there, and while your waiting for some company to send you that six figure offer you could be building your own corporation. Fill a niche in your local market.
It's one of the most rewarding feelings you'll ever get.

Become the employer.

college doesnt gaurantee anything

you get what you put into it. work hard, and youll find a good job.

also, its hard to get a job straight out of college, unless you get connections while you're there. it doesnt mean you wont eventually find something great, its why theyre 'temping' they're just waiting for a better job to open up

look around, explore some options, and if you really dont want to temp after college, talk to your advisor and others in your department about how to get involved a.s.a.p. this might depend in wether you're willing to relocate or not, too.

College guarantees you bills and loan payments - unless of course you have a full scholarship.

College does not guarantee you a stable future - nothing does that: not money, not wishes, not fame...nothing.

If college guaranteed a stable future, then all college graduates would be extremely happy people.

its no guarantee... you are supposed to take incentive and take every oportunity you have once you get your college degree... its no good if u graduate from college and just stay home waiting for a good job to come to u... you are the one who should seek and make the best out of your college degree.. No one is gonna come knocking at your door and offer you a good job.

Guarantees are not. People today who have a higher education can't even find the job, they went to years of college to obtain. This day and age, with the economy and such....sometimes it is more, who you know than anything else.
