"A doppelgänger is the ghostly double of a living person. The word doppelgänger is a loanword from German, written there (as any noun) with an initial capital letter Doppelgänger, composed from doppel, meaning "double", and gänger, as "walker". In English, the word is conventionally not capitalized, and it is also common to drop the German diacritic umlaut on the letter "a" and write "doppelganger", although the correct spelling without umlaut would be "doppelgaenger".
The term has, in the vernacular, come to refer to any double or look-alike of a person, most commonly in reference to a so-called evil twin, or to bilocation. Alternatively, the word is used to describe a phenomenon where you catch your own image out of the corner of your eye. In some mythologies, seeing one's own doppelgänger is an omen of death. A doppelgänger seen by friends or relatives of a person may sometimes bring bad luck, or indicate an approaching illness or health problem."
-There's actually an episode of Alias titled "Doppelganger", that's what got my interest in the question.

A mirror image of a person. Historically from Germany, and it was an evil spirit that would look like you & do harm in your image.
In dork terms (i.e. D&D), a doppelganger is a humanoid who has the ability to alter their appearance to resemble anyone else.
The best example I can think of as a doppelganger is Mystique from the X-Men movies & comics.
Hope that helps.

Carter

Dopplelanger or double angle, is what is use to describe the phenomenon of soundwaves through the air.
When you hear a train coming from a distance it it will sound muffled, when the train blows its horn at your location it's the loudest, and as it passes you the sound become more muted.
I suppose the sound of the train horn in decibles (dB) would be the same if the train was 15 km north of you, as it would be if the train was 15 km south of you.
Similarly, there is something called the Dope-linger Effect: this the phenomon of someone having a seemingly brillian idea at a distance, as the idea gets nearer and nearer to you.........You realize this is the most stupid idea man has yet to dream, as it passes from you....you again realize that the idea wasn't so bad (now that it's well-passed you) LOL

Doppelgänger: Never heard the ghostly evil legends. It's someone who can be mistaken for another person because they are so similar. Usually physical, but I had an unusual experience when I met someone who looked like me. It was like looking in a mirror. She had the same mannerisms, made the same gestures and had the same sense of humour. A few year's after our first meeting we were at a party together and we were wearing almost identical outfits. Weird.

Carly J, the windows on the cable cars in the Isle of Wight have mirrored glass... You saw your reflection... Anyways... I could give you the dictionary definition but you don't want that, i could give you the easy answer but you've already had that... So i'm going to say nothing... Except for my first comment which was to take the piss out of Carly J... Sorry Carly but i couldn't help myself... My doppelganger told me to do it!
