it costs $100 to sign up to be a consultant. you get a starter kit with almost $400 worth of product (enough to do about 30 faces) and training materials. some consultants choose to have inventory on hand (the dollar amount is up to you--no matter what you are told!), but some consultants choose to get product after their customers place orders. do what feels comfortable for you without placing yourself in huge debt!!

To begin a Mary Kay business, it costs $100 plus tax. This pays for your starter kit that includes over $350 worth of product, your 50% discount for being a consultant, a year subscription of Applause magazine and really great tax advantages at the end of the year. It is NOT a requirement to buy inventory, but it is highly recommended. Mary Kay prides itself in being different from other skin care companies because we have the product on hand and it can be given as soon as the order is placed. Your clients will buy more for you if they don't have to wait. Anyhow, to be considered an active consultant, in my unit, you only need to have a minimum first order of $600 which is $1,200 in product and $200 in product every 3 months to remain active in the comp. as a consultant. No matter what anyone tells you, do not put yourself into debt buying the product, and never make an order just because your director tells you to or to get the quarterly star prize. Big no-no. A full store is considered $1,800. This is currently what I have on hand. I don't carry all the colors and scents, because people are more willing to wait for those things, skin care people usually want right away. Hope this helps!

My inventory cost was $0. Inventory is completely optional. Remember, this is your business and you make your own decisions. My recommendation is to book your first party (or hold a debut party) and with those orders, place your first order. It needs to be at least $400 wholesale in order for you to get the 50% wholesale cost so you may choose to order a few additional items for inventory just to reach that amount. I don't buy into the whole inventory as necessity. It's just a way to get you to spend money you probably don't have. I buy as I go and it has always worked well. The $600 - $3600 that you were told about is Mary Kay's pre-packaged inventory options. You don't have to use them.
