i understand all candidates will be subject to Criminal Records Bureau checks along with other relevant employment checks-but what i want to know is would a conditional discharge over 10yrs ago for possession of drugs, covictions a long time ago for not having tv license and more recently a conviction for my troubled teen not attending school reg. be enough to stop me working in a school with my children? im certainly not a danger to anyone! my son keeps asking me to go into school and help like other parents do- if im turned down, can i appeal.?

I am an expert on this one i have 50 odd convictions oh yes a bad little bugger i am now a trained mentor a counsellor a community sports leader and done 61/2 years as a school gov CRB checked by 2 councils a suspended sentence counts as imprisonment because it was a sentence suspended and takes 19 years to be classed as spent
nut it depends on the council involved to decide if you are OK legally tours is spent but go for it you will get Clarence OK if not you can appeal and under the rehabilitation of offenders act you will always win so they wont even hold it against you or they are liable for discrimination try to become a school Governor it is very rewarding and there is lots of training available its cool i was for six + years good luck but yes you are clear to help in the school Dave

You might just end up causing problems for your child.

Sometimes the greatest thing we can do is not let our wants or needs go above the need for your child to have a wonderful childhood.

Maybe at your child's school is NOT the best place to volunteer.

I have told other people not to let their ego to be accepted go above the need for their child to be happy.

There are LOTS of places to volunteer. For example with groups where the mother or father usually run meetings such as Girl Scouts or Cub Scouts. Your child will be a part of what you do and you will be helping out.

The Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts need more people than schools.

Maybe a Basketball league or a sports program that your child is a part of... or if you are a part of a youth church program then that would be a good thing.

DON'T OPEN A CAN OF WORMS THAT YOUR CHILD WILL HAVE TO DEAL WITH... you may be able to just go home if they do not let you volunteer but your child will have to go back to that school every day and have teachers talking behind your child's back... Teacher Talk... and some are not very nice.

The laws may suck but they are not there to stop someoen like you, they are to stop someone that is bad and could hurt children. It is better to be safe than sorry and just make a blanket rule. I know it sucks... but I have shown you there are many more options that do not require a Criminal background search.

AND you child will be happy.... and that is what counts to you.

If you REALLY have to do it then the ONLY way you should go about it is get a lawyer and have the lawyer review the laws and rules and have the lawyer approach the school and find out without giving your name or your child's name.

if you can prove that you are a reformed character (from your drugs convictions) and if your crb check comes back without comment that says along the lines of 'this person should not work with children' you will be alright and it is then at the schools discretion as to whether they choose to let you help out at school.
Why don't you have a word with the head teacher? schools are usually very glad of the help that parents provide as their resources are low and volunteers are invaluable.
Go for it, and good luck

Anyone can appeal anything but it seldom does any good. Yes your past could prove an issue however most background checks don't go back 10 years! You were convicted for your teen not going to school? that could "suggest" you cant deal with children well and could be issue. Listen why not be upfront (if interviewed) and ask them? That way no background will be run. I understand you mean well but there are other ways you can help if this doesn't work out

First you can get a copy of your criminal record, in some states like NH you can have your record annulled, after a certain amount of time has passed. Also like one of the other comments talk with the volunteer coordinator, and ask him/her. I think in ten years the criminal convictions don't usually cause any problems, they are usually looking at most recent drug convictions, child endangerment, sex offenders. Best of luck.

the Dept. of Justice reviews your records. Unfortunately, you will probably be flagged for YOUR past convictions - regardless of the status of discharge. Most school's won't allow a parent without DOJ clearance to work with the kids directly. However, you can contact your son's teacher and offer to help with stuff at home (i.e. making decorations, grading papers, fundraising organizations) where you won't have to have clearance. Good luck! Your heart is in the right place - and realize that schools don't always know your whole story, they can only go on what the DOJ tells them. As far as appeals go - you'll have to appeal to the Dept. of Justice to remove your name from their "flag" list and follow their guidelines for clearance.
"Individuals seeking to challenge the accuracy or completeness of a record from the department's criminal history files must submit a written request for review. Your claim must specify the information at issue and include any available proof or corroboration for changes. To challenge your record, submit a Claim of Alleged Inaccuracy or Completeness (Form BCII 8706) with any criminal history record provided."

It may do! I know that when they do the CRB check they go into you history and they are very thorough. I would sugest you go for it I work in a school and parent helpers are invaluable its so good for the kids to see you in school too! I think to be honest it is convictions of abuse or any child related crimes that they look for. Fingers crossed for you all the best Bex
