So, we just took our '86 Cadillac DeVille to Muffler Brothers to have them do the brakepads and passenger side rotor. This was TODAY we did this. So my boyfriend is driving downtown and the TIRE CATCHES ON FIRE!!!! What could cause something like this? Is Muffler Brother's obligated to fix our car?? Oh my god, this sucks!!!

The shop didn't mention that anything else needed replacing. It only needed one rotor.......that's why we only replaced one. We didn't ask for them to take a cheap way out...the car was there to be fixed and drivable.......not to catch on fire.

It was literally not even an hour after leaving the Muffler Shop did it burst into flames. My BF was on his way to clean the car off.

WOW!!!!
Boy did they screwup.
By the way, you may need a new master cylinder.
The fluid pressure is not releasing back into the reservoir causing the brakes to remain partialy applied.
You'll also need fluid flush, new brake cylinders, pads, rotors, maybe shoes, and drums.
Insist on them paying far ALL of it.

It may be the brake rotor/pads, or the wheel bearing, or the ball-joint, or many other possible things that can cause increase heat to the tire. Is the muffler shop obligated....no, unless you can ABSOLUTELY WITHOUT A DOUBT show negligence. For goodness sakes, it is a 20 year old car, there are a lot of other things wrong and can/will go wrong.

first..why do you replace 1 rotor?..the tire that caught on fire was the same one that had the new rotor...Was it actually on fire or was It smoking right after you had the repair done?
There is a coating on the rotor to keep it from rusting on the shelf ..it needs to be burned off..Usually happens the first day...
Another option may be the caliper on that side sticking..which may make the tire heat up...
take it back to the shop..if they damaged the parts they fixed..they should replace them n/c ,any other parts that they should have be replaced in the first place should be at your cost...I know it sounds mean but if they didn't replace them and it is faulty it shouldn't be on them to pay...it looks like they were trying to save you money(which is not always a good thing)

if you can prove that it was their fault?
was it right after you drove out of the muffler brothers shop?
or as you say just driving downtown?
it could have been placed in some flamable liquid and not cleand off as some are hard to see but not to smell.
thus while driving all you needed was a spark
the answer to your question could be yes or no at this point.
more info is needed.

Oh yea, It sounds like you had a wrong pad or the pads were not put on correctly, this would cause the wheel to get hot. It must have got really hot to start on fire. Good luck fighting this but they should fix it.

This is possable if it has disk breaks on that tire. But it is more likly that it was low on air and caught fire from that.
If the breaks were installed wrong, yes it could make the tire catch fire, if the break got to hot.

wonder if the brake pads are the very cheap ones made from china. Cuz there were many cases like this. Many asian shops put these cheap pads on, and if I remember the report correctly, the pads were made of wood.
