On Sept 20 1964, the Phillies were 90-60 and the Cardinals were 83-66, 6 and a half games out, with 12 games left for the Phillies (Cardinals had 13 games left).

The Phillies lost 10 of their final 12 games, while the Cardinals won 10 of their final 13.

The Cardinals won the National League pennant by one game.

This is considered by many to be the all time worst collapse in a short period of time.

The Mets comeback against the Cubs in 1969 was "amazing", but the Mets won that one going away, winning the division by 8 games or so...and they clinched with about a week to go. The 1964 race went down to the wire.

It would be the worst choke job ever. They were 8.5 games ahead of Houston LAST WEEK! Houston has picked up 7 games in 7 days! Having said that, I think St. Louis will hold on. They get the Brewers for 4 games starting tomorrow, while Houston has to go to Atlanta. I know the Mets aren't really trying, but the Braves are pummeling them in the current series. The Reds have made it interesting too, but they are losing tonight (as is Houston right now), and the Reds really have no margin for error because they have to pass two teams. But for the Cardinals to lose an 8.5 game lead in 13 days, that would be the worst ever, even worse than the 64 Phillies, who were at least caught by a great team.

The 69 Cubs blew their lead by early September , and actually finished well behind the Amazins.

Honestly, you could probably take the top 7 teams from the AL this year, throw in the Mets, and the playoffs would be a lot better, but hey, it is exciting to watch the NL playoff "race".

Yes, it would be. The 1964 Phillies collapse was awful...but one has to remember that they played the best teams in their league during the final two weeks of the season.

The 2006 Cardinals, on the other hand...they had a pretty easy schedule and the Astros schedule was much more difficult over the last two weeks of the season. So IF the Cards collapse, I would put this collapse as the all time choke...

Yes by the numbers, having a 8 game lead with just 12 games to play would statisticly the worst late season collapse. The Phillies and the Mets game back from more games back but not as late as this seasons Astros

how about the 1995 seattle mariners coming back from 13 games to go with less than a month to play in teh regular season?

but to me, the worst "late season" collapse of all time is when the yankees blew a 3-0 series lead in the ALCS in 2004 and LOST the next 4 games to eventual world series winner boston red sox

Exactly is right. 1964 National League pennant was won by the Cardinals after the Phillies had led by 10 games with 14 left or something equally tragic.
