X is a pavement marking that we can see sometimes before coming to a crosswalk.

those markings are where you need to pull up to in order to get the signal to advance in my area. they don't have anything to do with the crosswalk, and are not all the same distance from the center line.

i am not a municipal engineer, however, i did stay at a holiday inn express last night!
