I think it depends on how long ago the trade in question took place. In the case of the US, slaves haven't been imported (legally) since about 1808 I think it was, and slavery was wiped out everywhere by 1865. All of those guilty of the trade, and those directly affected by it are long dead. It's past time to move on.
On the otherhand in cases where the trade has been more recent with survivors still living etc. it's a completely different situation.

Absolutely not.
However, countries have apologized time and time again over the last 20 or 30 years, in particular.
No living person in the U.S. has ever been a slave owner (well, maybe Algore's family when he was growing up)... therefore, there's nothing for anyone to apologize for.

Well, first of all we didn't do it, those people are gone, and for that matter the people who were the slaves are also gone. And my ancestors came to this country long after slavery was here, and from checking out my family tree, none of them EVER owned slaves. So what is the point? I din't have anything to do with it, did you?

i think slavery was a horrible thing and no one is glad that it happened, but who should apologize? no one i know had an active part in it. i'm an american but i don't feel like i need to apologize for something my country did long before i was born. would an apology from a third party help anyways?

No. Why you ask. Well we cannot go back in time and correct mistakes made FACT. However we can take those mistakes and LEARN from them. America isn't perfect. We are still a Young nation with alot of learning to go BUT, It's My personal opinion that we are currently the best thing out there. That being said there's still Always room to Improve.
