To be human is to have pain, to shed tears, to laugh, and to cry. To be human is to make stupid mistakes, to question the ways of the world, and to try to better one's self.
We are no better than the animals, though we have the ability to create art and ways to adapt to the planet.

To be human only requires that you be born from a female of the species.

Human nature is the insticnts, actions that humans perform. Certain human actions are unique to the species (or at least we beleive so at this time) This would include laughing, jealousy, deceit, and many others. (animals may have these traits, but we have not recognized them as of yet)

Two words, "free will". That is really what truly separates us from the animals.

Animals have compassion, pain, love, hope, and etc...but as humans we have free will, freedom to make a decision even if we know it is wrong "ethically".

Animals tend to act on impulse and instinct, however some are capable of reason, but reason is not enough.

We use our free will to make choices everyday, tending to our families, making the world a better place, however it is the same free will that makes accept religion and or become fanatical. The same free will makes us commit war, sabotage, and murder.

So being human is how you chose to exercise your free will.

it is nice if you can get hold of the "charter of rights" in Canada -- for example. The charter tries to defend and define what is strictly "human" and at times untouchable by authorities -- the right to life, to liberty, to expression, to breathe, to eat, to love are human impulses and part of our nature. last but not least -- the right to believe and/or not to believe (i.e. religion) is also part of that human nature. This is a long subject and one question and answer does not do justice to it.

being human is being capable of forging your own destiny and in having some concept of an afterlife...human nature is knowing that we do things that are natural and also some things that cannot be explained. We cry, laugh, love and create wondrous things but then we fight, hurt, maim and kill...we are fallible and not perfect..that is human nature..
