What's the comment to open a link in a new tab rather than a new window? Is there one?
For example Target="_new" opens a new window.

While it's true that there isn't any HTML markup to open links in a new tab, I'm not sure that's a bad thing.

The whole problem with forcing (or trying to force) links to open in a new window is that you are taking control away from the user. Opening them in a new tab, while seemingly a better idea, isn't really any different.

You should allow your users to decide where their links open, not try and dictate.

If a link leads to an external site, I advocate the use of a small icon next to the link to indicate this (something pioneered by Wikipedia), allowing the user to make an informed decision when they click it.

Sadly... there isn't one yet.

People who have tab enabled browsers (Firefox being my favourite) can set all links that have targets (that would open another window) to open them in tabs.

An add-on for Firefox called Tab Mix Plus has this option out in the open. I'm sure there's something in Firefox's about:config, but I haven't looked for it yet.
