Imagine there is a duck in a pond and you have an arrow to hunt it down. What are your chances of hitting the duck. 50:50 isn't it? Now think instead of one arrow you have 10 arrows for hitting the same duck. Does your chances increase in hitting the duck. I bet it does.
Its the same for a job. The more you apply and the more you knock, the chances increase in finding a job. I suggest you don't loose hope and change your strategy to get the duck, i mean a job. Next in line is the followup to a job application. Once you have applied for a job, do you followup. if you do then do you followup with vigour. Take a look at this as well.
Most of the employers look for 3 things, education, skills, and experience. how do your credentials compare with these 3 main elements. I suggest you take a calm and detailed inventory of yourself with these 3 main elements and figure out how you can present yourself and your credentials more appropriately to an employer. Once you complete this exercise, i am sure you will be better placed in your job search.

Put in as many applications as you can but you have to call those places if they have not called you after 5 days. If you're agressive enough, call after 3. Do your research on the ones you really want to work for and have good questions to ask about the company providing you have the skills they may be looking for. Don't give up b'cause things happen all the time like people quitting or getting fired. Good luck!

my girlfriend took four months in finding a job, she was an experienced Executive Assistant. She finally took one that has a 1 hour commute each day and is paid 1K less annually than she was at her last job. I've been looking for three weeks and had interviews, but no offers. I'm lucky now that I accepted a position with a small company. Don't worry, an employer will see your skill set and will snap you up immediately! You'll get one soon! Have faith in yourself and your abilities!

Look at examples of resume's in the job field you are trying to enter. Only use jobs on your resume that are like the job you are applying for. Employers only want to see the experience in which they are asking for on a resume'. On the application you put all of the jobs you have had to fill in the past 5 year gap.
Good Luck.

Remember- "This too shall pass"
You can start writing stuff for e-Magzines or shine as a Freelance-professional if things aren't going your way.
You can also try uploading your resume on various (All) job sites. I am sure there'll be mail in your inbox pretty darn soon!
Good luck
