past is use a a noun while passed is used as a verb.
past shows history. example, This past year as been complicated for me.
passed shows a process or success
example, I passed by the house on my way to school.
I passed my exams yesterday. I hope that helps.

The word past always refers to a time situation.

Whereas, passed, could be based on a change of locations where you "passed the school building".
Or it could relate to making an acceptable grade on a test as in " I passed the test"

Maybe even successfully "passed a kidney stone"

I would have passed over your question, but in the past I've wondered why so few people pay attention to their grammar. I thought I was past caring but it seems this lesson in class passed you by.

In the past, I think the inability to distinguish would have led to you being passed over to promotion to 3rd grade, however it seems those days are long past and you've passed all the requisite exams!
