new to playing? excellent. once you figure out the basics ideas, you're off to a good start, can finish games you have concretely won, and have some a new found confidence in new positions. And something to show your friends too :)

If you are talking about how to checkmate, i'll give you a quick understanding. Think about the enemy king. To checkmate him, you must attack the square he is on, plus all the squares he is on.

In the center, he can move to 8 squares, on the side he can move to 5, in the corner he can only move to 3. So where do you want to force the enemy king? You get a star if you said corner :)

There are basic mating patterns that are important to know. Queen and Rook vs. a lone king, Rook and rook vs. lone king, Queen and King vs. a lone king, Rook and King vs. lone king. All
of those can produce a mate in about 12-15 moves. Often less.

They are essential to practice. You don't want to get into competitve play, be up a Queen, trade everything off, and be unsure of what to do. Thats always sucks- to have a win, and not be able to execute it. You study those basic patterns and you'll be fine.

There are a ton of books that go over it. I mentioned a few you can pick up at your local bookstore in the sources.

The next thing you can do is study tactis and mating nets. find out what a back rank mate is. Find a book about mate in twos. If you study this stuff an hour per day, in a months time your game will improve leaps and bounds. I promise.

Anyways, if you have any questions, feel free to look me up. I'm addicted to the game myself and offer all types of help.

Think of Chess the same as boxing you never swing wildly or stupidly at your opponent remember the movie Rocky 3 when Rocky comes out to fight Mr.T in the first round what happened to him? he got his *** kicked and in the rematch at the end of the film we see a different Rocky who fights alot smarter and that's exactly what you have to do in Chess too otherwise your going to lose your opponent is not your friend in the game he is coming after you!

All your pieces have to work together in a unified harmony,
cooperation you have to control the flow of the fight otherwise you lose in Chess. You have to see much better than your opponent and think about what your doing don't guess or play without a good plan.

I remember seing a book on chess once with the title 'traps, zaps and pitfalls'.... wait a second... here it is: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=br_ss_hs/104-3693938-6715954?platform=gurupa&url=index%3Dblended&keywords=traps+zaps+and+pitfalls&Go.x=0&Go.y=0&Go=Go
And you could always try the 'scholars mate': http://www.chesscorner.com/tutorial/basic/scholars/scholars.htm
It's a classic!
Apart from that though, you'll just have to get better at chess to spot more opportunities!

try to control the center, and have a system, so you'll know what to do. Try the Caro-Kann as black, and as white try to get opponent into Giucco Piano or 2 knights defense.
