MIXED NUMBER TO IMPROPER FRACTION:
Multiply the denominator times the whole number and add it to the numerator, all over the original denominator.
So let's say you had 4½. You would take 2 x 4 = 8 and add 1. The answer is 9/2.
Here's another example: 3 2/3 --> 3 x 3 + 2 = 11, so the answer is 11/3.
Or another example: 3 11/32 --> 3 x 32 + 11 = 107, so the answer is 107/32.
It's really easy once you do it a few times, so you try it on your own... what is 7 3/4 ? I'll check your answer shortly...
IMPROPER FRACTION TO MIXED NUMBER:
Now the reverse is very easy also. The key is to divide and figure the remainder.
Let's say you had 23/9. You divide 23 by 9. So this is 2 with a remainder of 5. So the answer is 2 5/9.
Or another example, 18/4. 18 divided by 4 is 4 with a remainder of 2. So the answer is 4 2/4... but you need to reduce that fraction, so the real answer is 4 1/2.
Now you try this example with 27/12... I'll check back in a few...
ANSWERS:
We'll you never added a comment, but in case you want to check your answers:
Mixed to improper:
7 3/4 --> 31/4
Improper to mixed:
27/12 --> 2 1/4

Don't panic. :)
Remember that an improper fraction is a fraction where the numerator (the number on top) is greater in magnitude than the denominator (the number on the bottom).
Given a mixed number -- a whole number + a proper fraction -- you can easily convert it to an improper fraction. The denominator will be the same; the new numerator will be:
the whole part times the denominator + the old numerator.
For instance, to convert 18 2/3 to an improper fraction: the denominator stays 3. The new numerator is 18 * 3 + 2, which is 54 + 2, or 56. So the improper fraction is 56/3.
[To turn an improper fraction back to a mixed number, divide the numerator by the denominator, using long division if necessary. The quotient without the remainder is the "whole part" of the answer, and the remainder is the new numerator. The denominator stays the same.]
Hope that helps!

A mixed fraction is an Integer plus a fraction. For example 1 2/3.
An improper fraction has no integer portion and would be like 5/3.
To convert a mixed fraction, take the integer portion and multiply by the denominator (bottom) of the fraction part, then add it to the numerator (top).
For example to convert 3 5/7
take 3 time 7 = 35 add to 5 to get 40. the result is 40/7 is your improper fraction.

you would multiply the whole number ( The First number, as 1 is in this fraction: 1 5/8) by the denominator (the bottom or last number, like 8 in 1 5/8) and add it to the numerator ( the top or second number, like 5 in 1 5/8. Finally, put it over the original denominator, making 1 5/8 equal 13/8.

Multiply the denominator by the whole number and add the numerator. This number will now be your numerator; the denominator remains the same.
