Why did Islam split around the mid/late 600s?

i know it has something to do with the Sunni-Shi'as

mohammed died [sonless] & the descendants fought over his postion as head of islam. mo's son in law fought with mo's brother over succession & they been fighting ever since.....i think....chirp!

You mean 60's, the whole thing began in the 600s.
