Probably Honda Civic or the Toyota counterpart. Check out Consumers Reports. Every year it has an entire issue devoted to cars. It gives all their stats including price and expected reliability. The public library will have a copy.

Prolly the Toyota Corolla. I was going to say Pontiac Sunfire, but they quit makin' my car. :(

Corolla, with a 4 banger engine, gets 41 mpg. A slightly used one is prolly 'round 9-11,000 I would think.

"best"? Define "best." Is power a factor for you? If not get an old 90-something Geo Metro. 55mpg is sweet. Dont try to drive up any steep hills though. That 3 cylinder is pretty gutless.

Honda Civic is the best, but there are smaller and cheaper cars that get better mileage. i recommend not buying any of the Korean cars
