As long as the harddrive is not damaged you should be ok.
Laptops are NOT easy to work on. Unless you are skilled in Computer hardware and or A+ certified, I recommend taking it to a Computer repair shop and have them retrieve the Data off the harddrive and put it on CD's for you.

Yes, supposing the motherboard did not toast the hard drive when it burned up. The best thing to do is to get an external enclosure for your drive, like this one, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817145752 then remove the hard drive from your old laptop, place it into the enclosure according to the directions and then plug it into your new laptop via the USB connection. If the drive still works, Windows will see it and you will be able to pull your data off and you could even format the drive and use it as additional storage if you wanted to do so.

You need to have a desktop with a spot to put your laptop hard drive. Or you can replace the hard drive in your new laptop with that of your old one and back it up. If you will be putting it into a desktop, then you will need to plug it into the correct slot, probably ATA. You will also need a wire (about 3 dollars). If you want to put it into your new laptop, you will need to take the new hard drive out, which will probably void your warranty. Then, you can back up onto cds, dvds, or flash memory. I would reccomend trying the desktop way, its easier and you wont void your warranty. For more info, email me at Compbuilder1@gmail.com.

there's software that's needed. its not cheap-best way to do this would be to take it to a shop and have them copy the hard drive to a cd.

it will cost you about 200 bucks tho-the software wont be much cheaper.
