That man could discover knowledge by himself, without simply accepting the authority of Church and Scripture.

It is the ideological aftermath of the rise of science. Some people thought that the science of Galeleo and Newton had freed men from superstition and religion.

If you are talking about a Buddhist enlightenment then you are talking about reaching nirvana. It means many things one being the ability to see things for how they really are and not how we perceive them. As I understand it, Buddha stayed under a lotus tree for something like a year until finally reaching enlightment and once doing so, was in a permanent state of happiness for the rest of his life.

Please somebody with more knowledge answer this question because I always like to see other people's views as to what enlightment is.
