It depends how deep you want to get into the field. There are laborers in the field that need no qualifications except a strong back.
If you want to specialize, greenhouse management, nursery mgt, landscape design, etc. there are 2 and 4 yr degrees in the field. The Ohio State University is world known in their associate and bachelors degrees in all the horticultural fields. Their PhDs and grad students are doing world-class research. I am not saying this just because I am an OSU grad--it's true. There are probably universities near you that offer similar programs.
You need a high school background with some science and math. Other than that a college prep background will help. You can get into some universities with less, depending on test scores, but a CP background will help you do better at what you choose.
If you want the basics and then get out and get working you can get the 2 yr degree. Bachelors is better, of course, because you have 4 years of schooling and it's necessary if you ever decide you want to get into the research end of it or teach it. Good luck and I hope this helped.

Hi Rob, i'v just started a B-Tec first certificate in horticilture, i had no qualifications, the course is for 1 year and then you can go on and do the next level if you want to or you can just go straight into work but most places like you to have 2 years experience. I go to college 1 day a week and the rest of the week i go on a placement at a hall garden, The college will help you find a placement, it could be at a nursery, garden centre or landscape business. Really enjoying it. good luck. Phone your college for more details.

I started my gardening career by taking the rhs general certificate in horticulture, one evening a week. I followed this up by the higher certificate in horticulture, both were excellent. only after completing these courses did i start to find work in this field, and start to put all the theory into practice. These courses are run all over the country. Telephone your local college, and good luck.

If you are still at School try getting a weekend job at a garden centre where you can learn the different types of plants.
Then once you have left school, try and get on a course at you local Agriculture/Horticulture College.
Try the below links for a list of Colleges.

Work at a local Lawn and Garden Center. You really learn alot if you pay attention to customers wants and needs through different seasons. A Hort degree doesn't mean much in my mind. Experience & knowledge gained through learning from co-workers seems like it will get you farther in the "Green Industry".

For beginners, work at a nursery or a garden shop
If you're a kid, join 4-H or FFA.
if you're still interested study-up on your own at the library and then perhaps seek schooling.

first of all you would be wise to invest in a shovel. With regards to the level of qualification that you will need, you are already there judging by your grammar!!
