Do you mean in general or in the United States? In the US, many Europeans, as well as other cultures, arrived here and entered indentured servitude. Not exactly slavery, but with the concept that they couldn't afford the price to travel here, so in return would work off their debts. Unfortunately, many were taken advantage of, accrued "interest" on those debts, and were never able to pay them off.

Of course they were...
The Romans, Britons , Normans etc. all enslaved
many Irish peasants...
Slavery was the norm in Europe / Asia for thousands of years...
My British ancestors were Roman slaves and I want reparations from Italy....I want $10 million dollars....

Some were. They were desperately poor and uneducated when they arrived in the USA. They were at a tremendous disadvantage and were taken advantage of. No exactly comparable to slavery however.
