To verify who you are and that you are of age in case you have to be at least 18 years old. But the scammers do it so they can charge you a hidden shipping & handling or other fee, so never give your card number to ANYONE that you are not 100% sure is legit. Some alternatives are to use PAYPAL or to get your bank to issue you a card number that is specifically for online business and if you find that a company is a fraud you can usually get the charges reversed.

1) They are verifying that you are legal age (assuming you are referring to porn). 2) It is the most practical way to pay for things on the internet because it is instantaneous in most cases. 3) You will be charged after a set date if you do not cancel, so companies can rely on people forgetting to cancel a membership. Thus getting to charge you a month fee instead of just like $5.
So stop looking at porn!
Now if you are talking about ebay, any online store, or any other site in which you are just purchasing goods, then the reason they use credit cards is because of (2) up above.

A. How else do you suggest we can pay for stuff?
B. The "free trial period" is the biggest goof of all times in my opinion. If you're stuck with a 3rd class company that is out there to fraudulantly get your money, you're screwed. If it's a company selling stuff that requires a monthly subscription fee, that's where they ask your CC #. The point being, incase you forget to cancel your membership BEFORE your free trial expires, the company can then charge your CC.

They get your credit card number so they can charge you quickly and easily the second the free trial period ends.

sounds like you're looking at too much porn my friend. the reason they ask for a valid credit card number is to authenticate a persons age and charge you later if you don't unsubscribe by the end of the trial period.

It's usually in the fine print that they will charge you if you do not cancel before the end of the trial period.
So usually it is free as long as you cancel before the set date.

Just in case you forget to end your free trial they can rip you off for something you do not want.

The idea is to get your money. Or for porno, which i suspect you are complaining about, to get your money and to make sure you are 18 years old.
You have better things to do with your time. Go meet some real people.

some sites do not require a credit card...so it depends
some sites (esp. adult oriented sites) also require a credit card (even though their free) because they want to make sure you're an adult and not a kid
