I've heard there are loads of hidden Christian symbols in this book, but I can't find any. Any hints?

Well, most of the themes are from the ideas of Nietzsche (man as something between ape and overman; one astronaut's attempt to rescue the other strongly parrallels a scene in "Thus SPake Zarathustra.") with some possibly from Kierkegaard (The astronaut's "Fear and Trembling" while in the alien room at the end of the movie). Both of those philosophers did explore Christianity, however, and therefore Christianity can be said to appear as a theme.

No, I don't think there are Christian symbols in 2001, unless you mean that anything of a spiritual nature, any reference to rebirth, is Christian. But they are not, you know.
