[If it's possible, I need an answer by tomorrow. I'm cursing myself for not bringing home my chemistry book, hehe]

An oxygen ion has a -2 charge -
a. How many protons does the oxygen ion have?
b. How many electrons does the oxygen ion have?

[Oh and it's not needed but if you could explain why that'd help me out for future questions, I swear I don't remember learning how to figure this out!]

Oxygen is element 8
So the atom of oxygen has 8 protons and 8 electrons.
The ion has the same number of protons because you never loose a proton to make an ion.

If your ion is 2- then you need 2 additional electrons so you would have 10 electrons.

Note: most of the time in practice you won't get O--. You will have OH- instead.

The atomic number of oxygen is Z = 8. That means that an oxygen atom has 8 protons in nucleus and that a neutral atom has 8 electrons.

So, an oxygen ion with -2 charge has 8 protons and:

8 + 2 = 10 electrons

The charge of each atom is related to the nearest noble gas on the periodic table. The noble gases are stable because they fill up each electron energy level with valence electrons. I don't know too much about valence electrons but there is plenty of information about them out there. If you look at the periodic table you can see that oxygen needs to gain 2 electrons to have the same number as Neon and Lithium must lose 1 electron to have the same number as Helium. Therefore their respective charges would be 2- and 1+. . This is only true for elements that are sufficiently close to the noble gases. Some elements can in fact form different ions like Fe2+ and Fe3+. If you're not sure of the charge that an element should carry you should consult a periodic table as some of the more detailed ones will tell you this information.

Ions form because of the octet rule, atoms want to achieve the electron configuration of a noble gas to become stable. Atoms always take the easy way so instead of losing six electrons it gains two. Most elements want eight valence electrons. Remember eight is great.

Protons = 8
Electrons= 10
always no element can lose protons in chemical reaction,,

u can much easier just look at a period table on the internet than sit around waiting for someone else to answer. this helps you with nomenclature and stoichiometry.
