Just keep practicing and it will come. I know that sounds like obvious advice but there's no way to instruct a person to learn how to think about two things at the same time. The only advice I can give is to stop thinking of it as two separate things and think of it as one action.

Well, practice does make perfect, and having the guitar part down helps before you start to focus on your singing. But, I also reccomend that you find a song that you really like and relate to; Something that you know you could always play or sing to, maybe something you've already been listening to for a couple years? That's how I started... Find tabs/chords online that look fairly simple and just start working on it. The more comfortable you are with the music on the guitar, the more likely you'll be able to play around with the lyrics and melody when singing. Good luck!!!

Some would say that "practice makes perfect". In reality, Perfect practice makes perfect. Slow everything down to where you can do it correctly. If you practice mistakes you will perform mistakes.
When I was first learning guitar I would strum the chord, then sing the line, change to the next chord and sing the next line. It helps to get the guitar part down first. In time your hands will "know" where to go and you won't need to think about it. It takes time and patience but it will come. I've been playing for 36 years and still slow it down to learn new material, especially the new stuff the kids have been creating. Good luck, remember to have fun.

Let's see - It helps if you can sing without playing it first.

From there you learn the chord progression of the song.

Then sing the melody for each time the chord changes. play slowly.

Keep working on this and speed up to tempo as you go, and eventually you will have it.

play the song so much you can play it without thinking, and then start singing. it's easier to concentrate on one thing.
