I'm trying to decide between a Dell and a Compaq, and they have different processors... The Dell has a Pentium M processor (1.7ghz,2 MB cache) and the HP/Compaq has a Mobile AMD Sempron 3500+ (1.80GHz/512KB).

For those that have worked with both, which is better performance wise? Kepp in mind I really don't need it for much other than web surfing and doing school projects on. Thanks for the help!

AMD's Sempron was designed to compete with Intel's Celeron. The Pentium is in the same class as AMD's Athlon. In other words, the Sempron is crappy like the Celeron. So to answer your question, go with the Pentium. However, AMD's Athlon is pretty good and cheaper than the Pentium.

I'll let someone else discuss the processors with you.

The item I like on the new laptops are those tiny ones with 10 in screens but totally robust CD/DVD CPU and memory. To many notebooks are getting way to big, heavy and energy hungry. These new big laptops weigh a ton with the charger, extra this & that. It gets to the point that it doens't get used as a laptop because they are to much of a pain to lug around.

the pentium series has a the same processers as desktops but with the M TO INDCATE A MOBLE chip (oops caps) so it really depends, my pentium III M works fine but the higher the number I is slower than II and III is faster than II and hyperthreding is even faster but i would go with the sepran becouse its 1 point higher but if you want good sound intell usually has support for everything

Get the Dell, they are better built machines by far.....and they have much better tech support. You also get your program discs from Dell, not just a stupid rescue disc...........which make customizing your machine a lot better and easier.
