people. I think white people should be called colored people. They are white but turn tan when tanned, red when mad, blue when dead, pink when they blush. I'm not dogging on white people, it's just funny how white people called blacks colored back in when.

Well, it was a term they started using in the older days. After the blacks were given rights, and un-slaved. They weren't allowed to abuse their first amendment [bill of rights] by calling them "****ers" or "******." Instead they started calling them coloreds. The reason being is because white people find them different because they're black. And didn't care if they tanned and what not, because they weren't born with that skin tone. It's another way to use slander. Hope that helps.

Back in the slave holding days, slaves were called the "n" word, which is the word for black in Latin, French and Spanish made slang. Then
as times changed, the terms changed. I remember the term, "people of color" or colored people.

My Cuban Spanish teacher in high school would always laugh and say that "whites" should be called "colored" because hair, eyes and skin can be different colors, not to mention your point about tan, blue, pink, red.

I think that over time, we have tried to become
sensitive to others feelings. It just hasn't always been a successful attempt!

Did whites call blacks colored or did blacks run out and beg to be called that? As an immigrant, I struggle to understand hyphenated-Americans and that of blacks in America to change their lables.
Didn't they choose African-American over colored (NAACP) which was favourable to ***** (UNCF) which hinted at the other, much-discussed N word?

It was because the slave owners would rape the women and the women would have biracial chidren. It seemed more logical to call the Africans colored because the race mixing created a variety of complexions.

Interesting point. I think it's because black people have more melanin in their skin, as opposed to white people's general lack of melanin. Perhaps white people should be called "mal-colored". :)
