People have deep voids their lives & souls. Since the beginning of humankind, we have tried filling the void with idols, gods, goddesses, demons, whatever. Celebrity worship is an extension of that deep-rooted & deep-seeded need/desire. With regard to the question of being enthralled by reality tv, I can't answer from personal experience, as I've NEVER liked reality tv. My best educated guess is similar the above answer & many people seem to think that their lives are extremely dull, uninteresting & boring in comparison with people on reality tv shows (whether Celebrity Insider, Survivor, Apprentice, any type.) As a Christian, I believe this void in the soul can be filled only with the Holy Spirit (or Holy Ghost, depending on you personal faith & beliefs) dwelling in us upon accepting JESUS' KIND & LOVING offer of Salvation through HIS death on the Cross nearly 2,000 yrs. ago.

I think it fulfills some basic human need to worship something, and with religion on the unpopular list, it passes to "celebrities", like the pantheon of Gods that the ancient Greeks used to have.

Some innate desire to be in connection with something that society at large feels like is "special" or has special powers? A basic need to feel important in some way?

I have never watched any of the reality shows and am a certified sports bigot, watch nothing but the Americas Cup every three years, so I ask myself that same question time and again.

Because the people who get so hyped up about it (ie: the ones that follow the celeb-news, watch the shows, buy the stupid magazines) are so brainwashed by the media and the fake world they create that they have an addiction.

yeah, i'm purposely not reading stuff about him becuase it seems like a publicity stunt. Why can't we just not have celebrities?! they are annoying.
