Pre-contact period, archaeologists aren't able to put names to any of the tribes in North America. They moved around a lot, their cultures weren't so dissimilar that it was easy, etc. However, there are larger cultural groups that occupied different time periods. Paleo-Indians, or natives from the Paleolithic era, date back to around 8-11,000 years ago or so. They had similar kinds of tools and pottery, and they were probably mobile hunter-gatherers who lived in smaller family groups. These were the guys who came across the Bering Strait.

After that comes the Archaic period, then Woodland, then Mississippian (these guys built all those mounds in the midwest). Then it's contact period, and we start talking about Crow villages and such.

They now have evidence that paleo indians could have came from spain. Projectile points from spain and virginia are of the same makers (paleo). This could have happened because at this time the atlantic ocean was not as big because there was so much ice and glaciers that it made the distance not as far. There are many theroies of how the technology of the paleo people have gone away in the time of about 8000-6000bc. Most likely theroy is that the paleo people started to die off because of harsh conditions(on the east coast there was a major dry spell around 8000bc.) This was proven because there is a layer of soil around the chessapeak bay area and the majority of the eastern coast that scientist can relate this to a dry harsh time. Once they deplenished so much they eventually lost the technology and the archiac times set in. What scientist don't understand is that in Clovis, New Mexico there are also paleo sites. Possibly could have came from both.

they lived in the southwest and were the last to see the green world there, by the eleventh century they were the tank people with water supply lines and desperation led them out of the desert we only hope because it was something like when the Eskimo found out they did have to live in the ice house any more and all went south in 1905 and fear of leave a home land was conquered. Verdi area is very beautiful once.

The term refers to pre-historic North American Natives. They were presumed to be hunter/gatherers and loosely organized into tribal units.
