well one way to get him to the mental ward is getting the cops to believe he's a threat to himself or others.

There is nothing you can do except try to get yourself help. I think the person who recommended AL-ANON hit the nose on the head here. My sons father was bipolar and an addict and his parents paid for his crack till the day he died because they thought they were doing him a favor.

I didn't feel I needed AL-ANON, I'm not a group therapy type person, but for some people, being around others who have to deal with the same problems can be stimulating and encouraging.

I'm not saying give up hope, but don't try to live his life for him. When and if he is ready he will come to you, but he has to hit rock bottom first.

One more thing, if he asks for money DO NOT give it to him. If he says he's hungry then cook him a meal. If he says he needs clothes buy him jeans without the tags attached.

I wish you lots of luck.

Work a little of tough love on him, and don't cover up for him, if the police need to be called do so, try some of those intervention shows, to see if you can get on. Talk, talk keep asking him if he needs help, or has he had enough, and want help, don't give him any money, call the family together, and work together, and try to see if talking to him helps. express to him, how you all love him, but the buck stops here! it is up to him. to face reality, and grow up. and start to living.

Have an intervention. Get all your family to show up at the same time and take turns telling him the dameage and hurt he's causing. Often that will be enough to get hin to go in on his own.
