I am having my cabinets refinished and the man doing them has told me this is what he will do to help even out the look of them.

Stain will only soak into the wood if it is free of oils"furniture polish" or" polyvararthane" or polyurethane is a sealer and if it has been applied with a brush stains will not penetrate it! if the poly isn't very thick he might be able to scuff it up with sand paper still it won't soak into the wood very good and will leave a rough bumpy surface! I'd get a second opinion!

You do mean polyurethane, right? After something is polyied it is more or less sealed and sometimes slippery or glossy. The stain will just roll off it. All staining should have been done before the polyurethane was applied. The man doing your cabinets doesn't seem to know what he is talking about. Call any paint store and I am sure they will tell you the same thing. Good Luck

That is not true. Stain has to soak into the wood to adhere. He is probably using a tinted poly that will adhere to the existing poly. It won't look as good as if had been stained originally, but should be fine.

Don't let him do it until he puts a guarantee in writing that it will meet your criteria.

The clear coat finish is polymer that has virtually no porosity. The stain takes advantage of the porous wood surface to absorb into the wood, and impart its color.

NO IT IS A CLEAR COAT FINISH AND ANYTHING ELSE ON TOP OF IT WILL NOT MAKE IT LOOK UNIFORM THEY NEED TO BE RESANDED AND RE STAINED
