My Scag just did the same thing. It would run fine for a bit and then cut out and die, especially when I engauged the deck. It was the fuel filter stopped up. Remove it and blow through it, if it 's hard to blow through, then the filter is stopping up. It should be as easy as blowing through a drink straw if working properly. If this fails, try new gas, change spark plug, clean or replace the air filter, make sure the oil is at the proper level. If all this fails it may be easier to take it to a repair guy. Good luck

Yes this sounds like a fuel problem..... right now..., replace the fuel filter, the air filter if you havn't done it in a while..... and try a new plug... if that does nothing, the next step is the carb.. clean it, tear it apart and soak it in carb cleaner and blow every hole out with compressed air.
Dirty/rusty mag coils causing this? Well not from what I've seen... and trust me, had some realllllllllly rusty ones that still ran good.

Usually this is caused by either a bad air filter or dirty carb/old fuel. Most of the time it is the carb beign dirty especially if it does it when you are engaging the blades. I would clean the carb, change the fuel and try it again.... NO fix? Try spark plug and air filter. Could also be a dirty magnatron....the mechanism that makes the spark.

Mine did that also. Apparently there was condensation in the gas tank, and when the mower is engaged, it took a lot of power to mow instead of just run. Once all the old gas run through, and I put new gas in, it was OK.

Sounds like water in the fuel system. Drain the tank and fuel line, carefully remove bowl on the bottom of carb and empty water out ( may be only a few drops) Refuel...start up ... should run great.
