As long as he doesn't have an outstanding bill with the company, he can still use the phone, call the company and as for the unlock code. Companies put lock codes on their phones so you can't put other carrier SIM chips in them but they are good at giving you the code if you are no longer with them and left on good terms.

If you didn't however, go on ebay and type "k800i unlock code" a bunch of cell phone dealerships have the same programs the carriers use to give you the unlock code and will do it for a small fee. Some of them require you to send the phone in for them to unlock. This is not a scam, I am unfamiliar with unlocking the k800 but some phones must be physically plugged into a de-coder or computer to unlock, other phones you just type in an 8-digit code. Those machines run anywhere from $300-$2000 so its best you just send it in to them. Be sure to check their user ratings to see how many times they have done it in the past and how many happy customers they have.

Once the phone is unlocked, it will operate on any GSM network. (GSM is the network that uses SIM cards) The two major companies in the U.S. are T-Mobile and Cingular. I know Cingular has pay as you go but not sure about T-Mobile. Also, some smaller compaies have GSM but are limited to certain regions or states. I have also noticed the TracFone converted to the GSM network. I see their phones go for about $20. Just get the cheapest one, buy it, keep their SIM and throw the phone away.

They always change their plans so be sure to go on their website to see their current rates and coverage areas.

I believe the sim card will only work in the same network when my battery finally bit the dust on my old phone T-mobile told me if I could find another t-mobile phone I could use the sim card in it and my B/f has Verizon and he doesn't have a sim your best bet is to talk to your carrier and see if they can work something out they may have a pre pay option

The service is connected to the sim card they can't bar the phone. I would call to see what kind of plan they would put him due to the changes - they will work with you.
