I actually know where it comes from. :) But it seems like when I tell someone, who doesn't already know, where the material comes from that's used to make corks (natural, not synthetic), they are often surprised.

I have a purse made from cork, from Portugal, which is the largest exporter of cork in the world.

It is peeled off of a cork tree - Spain I think is a leader in Cork trees.

I wear Birkenstocks and the history behind them are that the sole of the shoe is cork which is off the bark of a tree.

a cork tree... i don't remember specifically what kind, but i know it needs to be a mature tree before you can get cork from it. my aunt actually had one in her yard.
