St. Louis is about 4 hours from Chicago. for sure, there is the Arch and the Brewery excursion, it truly is exciting no matter if you don't like beer, yet there is a good number of alternative activities, too. provide's Farm is the position different Busch Clydesdales stay, and it truly is oftentimes outdoors. you could take a riverboat dinner or sunlight hours sightseeing cruise. on the west fringe of the city, St. Charles is an exceedingly wonderful area. that is totally laid lower back and relaxing merely to stroll down the streets lined with quaint shops. There are also an incredible style of historic web pages in St. Charles because of Lewis and Clark and Daniel Boone. St. Charles a touch-prevalent treasure, and that is not any longer as annoying as St. Louis. The lodges are safer in St. Charles, too.

I'm originally from southwest Michigan, so I know there are plenty of great places for a quick visit. Some of my recommendations would be:
~ Springfield, IL, visiting the Abraham Lincoln historical sites and then driving down to St. Louis to see the Arch and Grant's Farm (where the Budweiser horses are).
~ Southwest Michigan, including Saugatuck, Fennville (http://www.craneorchards.com - a great fall activity), Holland, etc.
~ Put-in-Bay, Ohio...you take a ferry across to the island, where there are alot of shops, restaurants, history, etc. http://www.putinbay.com/
You could stop in Toledo on the way back and go to their zoo, it's fabulous.
Have a great time!

Ditto on Saugatuck, Mi.
Very stroller-friendly downtown and riverwalk with lots of shops, winetasting, and decent food (great ice cream shops, too). We are from Chicago, semi-foodies and had an excellent anniversary dinner at the country club restaurant just out of town.
Also have a great beach, water too cold, but sunning not out of the question in Oct.
Mackinaw to me is much too far of a drive for a weekend. If you avoid ruch hours you could make Saugatuck from downtown Chi in 2.5 hrs.

I'm from Chicago and we usually go to Galena, IL or Lake Geneva, WI. I prefer Galena because the ride is better and it's less commercialized (cheaper too). Good luck!!

Follow the fall color. The 55 yr old will enjoy the ride, The 10 mo old won't care where he is, as long as there's food.
Check this website for your predicted dates:
