A dime package played deep and zone making 7 of the players strong safeties. It's used to prevent sucessful long throws down field and generally used in the last few minutes of the game which requires two or more scores to win. It's also used long and third such as 3rd and 15.

I hate it when my team drops into a prevent defense because it's supposed to "prevent" a TD while allowing little gains, but it seems just as likely to prevent a win because if you give the other team a few yards here, and a few yards there, then the next thing you know, they're going for a score. Actually, it's a good defense when the other team needs at least 2 scores, but its terrible if 1 score will do it. Hope this helps!

Prevent defense is designed to keep the other team from scoring or making great gains in a single play. It is deployed near the end of the game or half when a team has a lead.

The defense adds additional players to their backfield and drop them in deep coverage usually with double or triple teams on key players.

The problem with the prevent defense is that it is passive. It allows short passes underneath the deep players with plenty of room to run for more yardage. Thus it is very ineffective.

Offenses can control the clock and gain enough yardage for a field goal or more reasonable shot at the end zone.

The old joke is that the prevent defense prevents you from winning!

Anyway,

"A defensive formation or strategy that employs an additional pass defender in an attempt to prevent long gains by the offense, usually near the end of the game."

It is a waste of effort. The only thing the prevent defense does is prevent your team from winning....better off to stay with what worked all game.

It is when the def's main goal is to stop the long pass. Most teams do this when they are up by a lot of points.
