If you stick a penny in the groove and the tread reaches lincoln's head than you should be ok, but start looking for new onces

The distance between Lincolns head and the edge of the penny is 2/32nds. This is the minimum allowable tread for a state inspection. if you do the penny measurement check the tread depth in at least 3 different areas of your tires. If you can see the top of his head it's below 2/32nds. The inner center and outer treads should be checked also. They make a cheap gage most mechanics call a tread depth gage. It's about 1 to 2 dollars and can usually be purchased at an auto parts store. This gage can also be used and is used to check the thickness of brake pads which have the same minimum of 2/32nds requirement to pass inspection.. But a penny will work fine for your tires. Just don't check the tire in one spot. The gentleman who describe what causes certain tire wear is right. If you find the wear un even then get the items checked that he described.

Depends on how the tread is wearing. If you have the sides of the tires worn then you need to rotate. Use to use a quarter to check the tread wear. If you turned the quarter upside down and stuck it in the tread and you could see the top of the presidents head, then you need to buy some new tires.

the penny answer is really not accurate.... your tires might be great in the middle but worn out on the edges... Tires worn out on the edges... many factors.... air pressure is to low... which is also the number one cause of tire blowouts...also you might need an alignment... they need to adjust castor... camber and toe...go to the internet and ask what these are... tie rods, ball joints, upper and lower, a frame bushing... all of these might mess up your tire.. also tires might be worn only in the middle... too much air... People buy tires that are P rated meaning passenger rated and need LT rated tires Light Truck tires... and the air pressure on the different tire varies...for example P235/75R15 4ply tire requires 40psi on a 1997 ford f150 and a LT235/75R15 6 ply tire requires 60psi on a1997 ford f150, truck OEM is P235 and people put after market tires LT235 and forget to change the air pressure... not a good thing and ofcourse visa versa.. email me and I will be glad to answer your questions about tires...
