Aside from the Christ, perhaps Albert Schweitzer.
He spent a lifetime giving medical aid to the natives of Gabon, his reverence for life was not inspired just by religion but from his great heart. He used his many talents to tend the sick and do what one man could against the loss of ethics in the modern world.

I will argue John Lennon. We lost Mr. Peace Love and Understanding in the early 80s due to a mentally crazed fan---he obviously wanted noteriety and to go down in the books. His persecution while in the states was purely because more of America was listening to him rather than the president. Since his death, we have never looked back to see the possibility of Utopia. :)
