My mother had one put in when she built her house 20 years ago. The suction and cleaning was never quite as good as it is on a regular vacuum, but the real problem with it is that it doesn't even work now - about 10 years ago a pipe broke in the wall, which ruined the suction on the whole system. The cost of repairing it would have been far more than that of just purchasing a regular machine, which works better anyways, so she never got it fixed. It was convenient - the hose weighed a lot less than a standard vacuum - but all things considered, I would recommend that you go with a regular vacuum.

On the upside it's convienient, you just carry a hose around and stick it into different outlets in the wall, It's quiet because the vacuum is usually in a garage or crawl space out of the way, it can be exhausted to the outdoors.

On the downside the installation of the pipework and buying a large vacuum unit can be expensive, although some places off do it yourself kits. If you get a clog the only way to unstick it is to run a golfball through the pipe and hope it comes unclogged.

In the long run it's not worth the expense unless you do have allergies.

I had a central vacuum system and it is convenient to simply go from to room without lugging around a heavy cleaner. But, I do not feel it cleans as well as conventional vacuum cleaners, especially with the new technology in vacuums. Of course that same technology may pass on to central vacuum systems.

The suction on them isn't nearly as good as a decent regular upright. If they get clogged someplace in the middle of the unit it's a b**** to unclog and you won't be able to do it yourself.

They are easier, in some ways, because you don't have to drag a heavy vacuum around.

We have one but after having numerous issues with it clogging with pet hair, we decided to just not use it anymore and are much happier with the dyson vacuum.
