P = 100,000(1+.05)^4
P = 100,000(1.05)^4
P = 100,000(1.21550625)
P = 121550.625

In year 0 the population is 10^5. In year 1 the population is 1.05*10^5. In year 2 the population is 1.05+1.05*10^5 = 1.05^2*10^5; in year 3 it will be 1.05^3*10^5. See the pattern? In year n, the population will be 1.05^n*10^5. You can solve for n=4

~As you can see from the conflicting answers here, many of which are based on the same formula, Yahoo Answers is a pretty dumb place to look for homework help. Gee, have you thought about doing your own work and maybe asking your teacher for help (or looking at your book even)? No? Then don't worry about the answer. You're going to fail the course in the long run. Get off your lazy butt and learn how to do your own work or resign yourself to the fact that your life is going to amount to squat as you toil at some meaningless menial job for minimum wage.

If it's increasing, the general rule is:
original population(1+ rate of increase)^number of years.
Be sure to change your percent to a decimal.

For decreasing, you subtract the rate of decrease from 1.

5% of 100,000 is 5,000 if the population is increasing 5% per year than you know that it will be 105,000 in one year from now.
If you want to know what it will be in 4 years from know than you just multiply 4 by 5,000 which equals 20,000 than add that to the current population 120,000

ar^(n-1)
a=100000
r=1.05
n=4
so, 100000 x 1.05 ^(4-1)
=115762.5

or:
1st = 100000
2nd = 105000
3rd = 110250
4th = 115762.5

(** i am not so understand what you mean 4 years from now, if the 5th year, then the answer should be 121550.625)

anywhere, have fun and good luck!
