Density is equal to mass divided by volume. d = m/V

Because of hydrogen bonds, the structure of ice is very spread out. Let's say you freeze 10kg grams of water. Now you have 10kg of ice. Since the hydrogen bonds make the ice structure spread out, you have a bigger volume. According to the formula d = m/V, if the mass stays the same, and the volume increases, then the density MUST decrease.

Ice does no longer exist at room temperature and rigidity. There are, I believe, 3 elements that are less dense in the solid form and ice is one of them. It is due to the crystal structure.

Ice is less dense than water in any temp and is melted into water at room temp.

Because when water crystalizes into a solid - forming ice - it's molecules are farther apart than water in its liquid form; therefore ice has a lower density than its warmer counter part, so it floats!
