No they are quite often wrong, you see a guy with shaved head & tattoos and think "he looks a nasty sort"
but he turns out to be a really nice bloke...first impressions are just judgmental stereotyping.

You know, how after you are friends with a person for a long time and then you remember how you met and the first impression you got from that person. And how it appears completely wrong after some time. So, it is important to keep in mind that first impression is not all to the person, but it should be the guide, because some qualities (like good hygene) are essential.

First impression is very important to me because that's what I remember most about a person say for example i met someone 5 years ago and we are still friends today and looking back you would be like remember when I first met you (fill in the blank) so i think first impression is important.

I'd say for the person giving the impression it is important, but for the people who are getting the impression, I think they should not make decision based on first impression.

As a basic rule yes, but I think it can depend on the circumstances in which you meet someone. When I first started my job the guy who I had to work along side was the most un-accommodating, ignorant, rude piece of shite I'd ever had the misfortune to meet. He was unhelpful and arrogant and made my first week working with him a total nightmare. As I had only just started there I didnt want to be seen as questioning an "old" member of staffs behaviour to other staff members and decided that I would approach my boss for a quiet word when they returned from holiday after the weekend. The week finally ended and I went home mentally and emotionally bashed. I hated this person for how he had been to me and just knew I couldnt possibly spend another day with him. That evening he obtained my number from work and called, he told me that he felt awful for his actions and that it was no excuse for how he had been. It turned out that his sister had died the weekend previous after a long illness, he thought that by coming to work it would help him cope- so he wouldnt think about it. He appologised over and over and actually ended up breaking down on the other end of the telephone. We worked side by side with eachother for nearly 5 yrs and I now regard him as one of my closest most precious friends-
So yes, first impressions do count, but there are exceptions. No-one knows what goes on "behind closed doors" and everyone to an extent deserves a second chance, afterall, we are all only human x

You never get a second chance to make a first impression. - that's how the saying goes and I've told that to my son many a time when he has been for an interview

No, I don't think you should go on a first impression - you might be having a bad day and feeling ratty, they might be having a bad day and feeling ratty. Likewise they might come across initially as cute and nice, only for you discover that this was all a show and they are really complete psychopaths, or worse, gobshites.

well, think there important, but sometimes people get nervous to meet new people. so the more your around that person, maybe the more you'll learn about them and begin to like there personality more then the first time.
