I am the mother of three children. IN schools today they seem to put as many kids as possible in a classroom and if one of them doesn't understand something "oh well" the teacher goes with the major part of the class. The teacher has so many kids and is on a set schedule to teach things at a set pace that they don't have the time to slow down and CARE if they are leaving some kids behind.
With the world the way it is today(divorce, death etc) I feel that alot more kids are depressed. Some of that may be to the fact that they can't fit in at school because the teacher has no time for them or it could be thier homelife. Just becasue they may be slower doesn't make them stupid. We as a country need to wake up and realize these kids are our future. They are closing smalller schools(in Arkansas) which I feel is a mistake, those school made a difference in our kids life Thank YOu.

Problems? Mostly Gov't not putting money into whats most important. How are we going to have these kids as educated adults running this country if there is nothing to teach them with?

It seems like there is more depression but with the world the way it is, with terrorists, etc, everyone is, not just the kids.

But in the education field for a cause of depression, look what they are taking away and replacing it with in that forum. No more art, music and specials, limited recess and replace it with reading and math every moment they get. The stuff that opens their minds to the creativity and good stuff in the world is being cut.... also leaving no outlet for expression of the mess in this world like the above mentioned stuff.

I am 50 years old and have raised 2 children.

Today teachers are being forced to teach so that students can pass the state exams. Then there is the pressure on the student to do good to make the school look good. And that new 'No child left behind' sounds great but isn't practible.

Students spend less and less time with family because everyone is so busy trying to be the best they can in EVERYTHING. Whatever happened to sitting down and talking with your family. Now you grab something to eat on the way to something else. AND yes students are more depressed because they are just plain tired. Look at the stats for driving while sleeping. These kids have to work, study, go to school and excell at everything. Talk about pressure!

55% of drowsy driving crashes are caused by drivers less than 25 years old

Being awake for 18 hours is equal to a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08%, which is legally drunk and leaves you at equal risk for a crash.

School is a reflection of society. There are more depressed people in society today so as a result there are more depressed school aged children. I don't know that school causes the depression or simply gives it a place to show itself.

I think education is way too impersonal now. Kids are treated more like numbers than like persons. This makes kids feel lonely or unappreciated.

Schools are having to deal with the residual of broken homes, drug addiction, sexually transmitted disease, poverty, and every other malady known to man. Kids are not as nurtured at home and school is the only place they get any attention. Very Sad.

I think the depression stems more from life at home. Speaking from what I have seen, many parents are not as involved in their kids lives as my parents were in mine. I think kids are depressed knowing that nothing they do will get their parents attention. Why succeed, what motivation do they have?
